They are having great difficulty accessing resources, communicating with staff, and helping their children learn. 01:15:54 Marlene Jairam: English language learners; ESE students 01:15:56 Glenis Contreras: High school and kids with ADHD and MH 01:16:03 Elizabeth Edwards: Yes. Students in schools with high poverty rates. 01:17:19 Kelley Farrow: our families who have over due cable/internet bills can't maintain the internet connections needed. We have given hotspots, but some families have multiple school age kids and not enough bandwidth. We have been able to furnish every student with a computer that needs one, but getting internet was another barrier we had to problem solve and continue to do so. 01:22:24 Cecelia Leong, Attendance Works: You can also use 5 Whys to explore bright spots--e.g. some students are very engaged in DL. Why? 01:23:40 Jessica Overstreet: not motivated 01:23:42 Theresa Reynolds: lack of supervision 01:23:50 Glenis Contreras: Playing video games 01:23:52 Kevin Garth Flint: ghosting classes. 01:23:55 AllisonRussman: lack of concentration 01:23:57 Adrianne Torres: no relationships w/ staff 01:23:59 Theresa Reynolds: distracted 01:24:00 ida oberman: depressed 01:24:14 Theresa Reynolds: tech issues 01:24:18 Glenis Contreras: Parents lacking understanding regarding technology 01:24:25 Kevin Garth Flint: ^^ 01:24:25 ida oberman: missing feeling close to classmates feeling isoalted 01:24:32 Rochelle’s iPhone: enjoying their “free” time! Also with mental health concerns such as depression or grief. 01:30:59 Elizabeth Edwards: Peer to peer and building those relationships can also stem from the PTO, SAC, and other community connections. 01:31:37 Cecelia Leong, Attendance Works: Thanks Elizabeth 01:31:43 Leanne Radabaugh - K - 8 MTSS Coordinator - NC: assigning a classroom buddy to remind the students 01:31:45 Elizabeth Edwards: Parents being involved and their student seeing that parent engagement. 01:32:06 Elizabeth Edwards: Yes. exactly! 01:32:08 Danica: Mentorship, and A.R.T (At Risk Team) 01:32:09 Marlene Jairam: offering the child the opportunity to physically return to school. Teacher inviting child in to the class. 01:32:10 Jaime Segovia: good idea 01:32:12 Pat Morgan: Help the parents/student make a reasonable schedule…Our school is very flexible 01:32:31 Monica: I've made schedules for kids to follow and if a child was staying with a grandparent or none tech savvy adult have them set alarms on their phone for when the student needs to be logging in for the day, specials, after lunch, etc. 01:32:49 Mr. Raúl Alcantar - CSCE Dean (he/him): Opportunities for students to showcase works, build self esteem, engage them back by giving middle school youth opportunities to “teach backs” 01:32:54 Pat Morgan: Our courses are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week 01:32:55 Yolanda Pinto: provide technology to students (laptops and hotspots) 01:32:57 Cecelia Leong, Attendance Works: Access to tutoring support 01:33:16 Kelley Farrow: We have offered for students to return to school face to face and some schools have used a staff person to reach out in a mentor type relationship to help engage the online students. This is especially critical for those teachers who are teaching both face to face and on line simultaneously. 01:36:07 ida oberman: And thank you so much - remarkably reich 01:36:09 Cathy W.: Here’s the link to the class evaluation survey! Please let us know how we can improve:https://app.upmetrics.com/data_collector/ckf2oltbqlt8k0759tfdbfybj 01:36:50 Leanne Radabaugh - K - 8 MTSS Coordinator - NC: Thanks you all! This was wonderful as usual. I have to sign off and run to another meeting. Sorry! 01:37:12 Antoinette: How do we stress the importance of student engagement to parents 01:38:24 Antoinette: How do we get parents to understand how flexuating between face to face and e-learning disrupts the learning process. 01:38:54 Glenis Contreras: Thanks! 01:39:01 AllisonRussman: how can you make it go to a preventative program vs punitive 01:39:31 Marlene Jairam: I like those ideas Sue 01:40:27 Sue, Attendance Works - Baltimore MD: Thanks Marlene 01:41:23 Sue, Attendance Works - Baltimore MD: If anyone has ideas on engagement strategies for a virtual world please pop it into the chat. We share the chat after each session. 01:41:43 Antoinette: Thank you for the feedback because I deal with families from the socio-economic backgrounds. 01:42:27 Sue, Attendance Works - Baltimore MD: Our language and actions will communicate over time that we are moving to problem solving. 01:44:07 Elizabeth Edwards: The punitive part I think stem from frustration and need to quickly address the program with minimal intervention 01:45:02 AllisonRussman: so should we look at with all absences, excused and unexcused 01:47:13 Theron Schutte: How do districts do the home visits. I assume at least two people from the school visit? Is that in lieu of what otherwise would be student - contact days in the classroom given the teachers are contracted for X number of days. Are people hired to make those visits in lieu of the teachers? 01:47:53 Kelley Farrow: @AllisonRussman we do. We list all absences regardless of reason. We take the reason into account for intervention purposes, but otherwise, we still discuss the student to make sure we are taking away whatever barriers there are or getting the appropriate folks to the attendance team table. If it's medical and 33 are excused, the nurse should already be aware or brought into the convo if they are not aware. 01:48:11 Cathy W.: Here is the link for Parent Teacher Home Visits http://www.pthvp.org/ 01:48:48 Sue, Attendance Works - Baltimore MD: Districts conduct home visits differently across the country, the parent - teacher home visit is the teacher, and the teacher is compensated for participation, other districts have attendance teachers, social workers, and pupil personnel workers. There are a range of strategies, and who is responsible, and the protocols that are followed including whether it is one or two people who conduct the visit. 01:49:12 Courtney Klingman: Theron- the majority of our home visits are completed by Social Workers. There are some teachers/school counselors that will also do home visits. We try to go with another person, but there are times where we do go solo. 01:49:14 AllisonRussman: @Kelley Farrow thank you! 01:49:19 Kelley Farrow: In Pinellas County, Florida, school social workers make home visits. We don't automatically go out in two's but most schools will accommodate safety concerns of staff. 01:49:51 ida oberman: many thanks! can’t wait till seminar 3
