Researchers can play an important role in fleshing out the connections between attendance and achievement. They can:

  • Advocate for including chronic absence on state longitudinal data bases and other data collection tools.

  • Push for increased access to data by student identifier to do more in-depth research on the link between attendance and achievement.

  • Include chronic absence in program evaluations.

  • Research unexplored aspects of chronic absence, including the role of preschool attendance and tardiness in influencing good attendance in the primary grades.
